This has been the most amazing year in music for at least two decades. We have had some really amazing comebacks and this has made possibile to place my three favourite bands ever as the top three of this chart, for the first time.
New Order released some fantastic outtakes from their last album. While we wait for new material, we've had four new great songs from Pixies, the first proper release in 22 years. The best full length album of new songs comes from Massimo Volume, Marlene Kuntz confirmed themselves as another top Italian band with an excellent album.
Prefab Sprout released an absolute masterpiece, first new songs in 13 years, while we've had to wait 22 years from a new fantastic album by My Bloody Valentine and even more to see the original line up of legendary Italian band Litfiba playing live again.
Debut of the year must be Jungle Radio's self titled album, Johnny Marr and Exit Calm came back with two excellent albums. Pet Shop Boys released a surprisingly good album after the disappoining Elysium.
Santo Niente, Diaframma and Virginiana Miller made three really convincing returns in Italy, Cosmo from Drink To Me did a wonderful solo effort. Elio E Le Storie Tese came back with an album which is a bit disappoining by their stellar standards, but still pretty good.
While New Order and Peter Hook released live albums, Tom Chapman, the bassist who has replaced Hook in New Order, released a very promising EP with his side project Rubberbear, and the former Revenge bassist Brian Whittaker released nice songs with the name Storm Of Change. Two other convincing returns came from veterans David Bowie and Section 25.
Stefano Pilia from Massimo Volume released an album with In Zaire and one with Paolo Spaccamonti, Gianni Maroccolo from Litfiba did an amazing collaboration with Claudio Rocchi and various guests.
I've had the chance to hear many other albums, mainly through Deezer (which helped me discover a lot of great chill out and smooth jazz too), and some of the best include dance stuff like Major Lazer, Daft Punk, MIA, Deetron and Cut Copy, the comeback of Wire, the emerging talents of Grizzly Bear from America and Blastema from Itay. I've also heard two more disappointing albums by Depeche Mode and OMD, but that's hardly any news since those bands have lost inspiration a long time ago.
Merry Christmas and a happy 2014, which looks promising again with new albums from Gabrielles Wish and Las Karne Murta coming soon!

At one point, it looked as though Exit Calm were lost to the music world.
The space following the release of the band's debut album was empty, a void filled by doubts over the future. Yet late last year, Exit Calm signalled their intention to return.
Work was under way on a new album, with early signs from those sessions revealing that something special was brewing. Fusing blissful psychedelia with often brutal electronics, tracks such as recent single 'When They Rise' was utterly uncompromising.
Now, with the final mix-down complete, Exit Calm are ready to unveil their new album. 'The Future Isn't What It Used To Be' is set to be released on September 23rd via Club AC30, but ahead of this Clash is delighted to be able to offer you the exclusive first listen.
It's a bracing, engaging experience. Exit Calm - despite their moniker - aren't a band to chill out to, with their take on shoegaze pushing the needle defiantly into the red.

Exit Calm have revealed plans for new album 'The Future Isn't What It Used To Be'.
At one point, it seemed as though Exit Calm were lost to us. The band drifted into silence, with releases slowing down and touring drawing to a halt. Earlier this year, though, the band burst back into vivid life.
Comeback single 'The Rapture' was all feedback and adrenaline, a leather-jacket clad ode to life on the wrong side of the tracks.
Now they're ready to release their new album. 'The Future Isn't What It Used To Be' will be released on September 23rd, with long term home Club AC30 providing the band with safe harbour.
Stripped from the album, 'Fiction' shows what to expect. Exit Calm have a swirling, psychedelic sound with a wicked, evil edge.
Noise rock with plenty of soaring melody, 'Fiction' has a low slung, breakbeat influenced sound which recalls the glory days of baggy.

I've already said how's the music coming from Africa is amazing and innovative: Zouglou from the Ivory Coast, Azonto from Ghana and Naija from Nigeria are major shifts in music we can only dream of in Europe or North America.
But there are other really interesting things going on on the other side of the Atlantic ocean, especially in Cuba and Santo Domingo. While in the Dominican Republic artists sound fresh and innovative in the Dembow genre, there are many excellent orchestras in Cuba bringing forward the Timba tradition and mixing it with jazz, soul and other modern sounds. One of the most important and long lived orchestras is Juan Formell's Los Van Van. Here's one of their best songs which gives the name to one of their best albums.

A pubblicare “Mare Tranquillitatis” sarà la Twelve Records (Jester At Work, Cesarians).
Il disco è stato registrato negli studi della stessa etichetta.
A guidare la formazione come sempre Umberto Palazzo, figura di spicco del rock indipendente nazionale fin dagli anni ’90, quando il Santo Niente gravitava nel circuito dei Csi.
Prima bolognese e poi pescarese di adozione, Palazzo è originario di Vasto,
«Nonostante siano passati sei anni dal Fiore Dell’Agave, tutto il materiale è stato scritto e prodotto negli ultimi dodici mesi – si legge nella nota stampa -. Non c’è nessuna concessione alla nostalgia, nessuna relazione ai molti progetti paralleli dei membri della band, ma anzi una fortissima tensione verso il nuovo e lo sperimentale».

Prefab Sprout are of the most under-appreciated pop groups of all-time. Any self-knowing music fan should acknowledge Two Wheels Good, From Langley Park to Memphis, and Jordan: The Comeback as absolutely essential albums, ones containing extraordinarily witty lyrics and lushly infectious chord changes — trademarks of idiosyncratic frontman Paddy McAloon. McAloon has been selective with the band’s releases as of late, averaging an album or two per decade — most recently with 2009′s Lets Change the World with Music.  McAloon’s health issues have led to impaired vision and decreased hearing, which has left some to wonder how ably the talented songwriter can currently create new music.

Regardless of McAloon’s current works, an excellent new Prefab Sprout album surfaced over the past week. The ten brand new tracks were uploaded by an anonymous user back in March, with the album titled as The Devil Came A-Calling. The Prefab Sprout fanbase just recently realized the album’s existence online a few days ago, so they’re still in the process of digesting what many consider to be McAloon’s best work of the decade. The glitzy siren-aided infectiousness of “The Best Jewel Thief in the World” compares to McAloon’s greatest pop epics, while the somber jazz-inspired guitar stylings of “Grief Built the Taj Mahal” show his penchant for metaphorical whimsy and engrossing historical narratives. Overall, The Devil Came A-Calling sounds like one of the year’s best — and probably the best Prefab Sprout album since Jordan: The Comeback.

As of right now, there are several theories as to what The Devil Came A-Calling actually is:

-A brand new Prefab Sprout planned to be released this year or next. Perhaps the band was swapping rough cuts of the album’s tracks on online with the producer (Tony Visconti?), but a middle-man obtained the tracks somehow?

-These tracks are from 2004-2005 recording sessions that Paddy abandoned. He is reputed for apparently having dozens of unreleased songs, and this just may be the surface of them. Some details on what this album could potentially be:

Devil Came A-Calling (2005) – A dark, melancholic album, of which very little is known.
“I struggle with melancholy, though I try to keep it out of my songs. I’ve written a lot of moaning songs these last few years; I’ve had to stop myself. But I do have one or two unreleased LPs with dark things there.” (Mojo #191, October 2009)
“I have an LP called… the song that I think of as being the centre of it is called Devil Came A-Calling, which takes a completely different view of the world to this one [LCTWWM]. It’s almost like the mirror-image of it. Devil Came A-Calling… and it’s darker, and it’s the other side of this. So you could say, well where do I stand in that? I don’t know where I stand in it. I’m just looking for subjects that have power for the listener. So that I did just before my hearing problem. That was 2005. Devil Came A-Calling – so there’s another one for you [laughter]. Maybe I should do that next. Maybe I should do that next – then they could make a kind of double CD at some future point [laughter].” (Arnd Zeigler interview September 2009)

Some allege this is all from a very talented Prefab Sprout imitator. To that I say nonsense. No one is replicating Paddy’s sound this convincingly. Just listen to the quality of these tracks and one thing is clear: These are brand new Prefab Sprout tracks. And they’re great as hell.

While European and North American artists haven't been able to sound inventive for years, there's currently a huge burst of creativity in Africa, which goes in general under the name of Afrobeat. The Zouglou movement in the Ivory Coast, for example. But what's really breaking into the mainstream anywhere is the Azonto scene from Ghana. Fuse ODG's Antenna (featuring The Fugees' Wyclef Jean) has just entered the UK Top 10. The anthem for the TINA movement: This Is New Africa!

From Delta 5 to The Opium Kitchen through the Scars

Sometimes hidden treasures are cheap. On iTunes you can find a compilation for £5.99, for that ridiculous price you have the most important tracks of Delta 5, one of the most underrated bands in history: Singles And Sessions. The "Plus" version, re-released in 2011 by Blue Apple Music, adds three live tracks and three remixes, one of them by ex New Order's Peter Hook, to the original set originally published by Kill Rock Stars in 2006.
About time to rediscover this band then, which emerged from Leeds with Gang Of Four (they were also part of the Rock Against Racism movement and were assaulted by fascists) and played in New York with Bush Tetras, and these are not simple coincidences. The sound was exactly that post punk funk. Delta 5 might be seen to those bands what Section 25 and The Wake were to New Order. A minor band, yes, but an original part of a scene, and with plenty of great songs to rediscover. I've always wondered why so many Joy Division fans ignore such a masterpiece like Section 25's Always Now. Well, now it's time to wonder why Delta 5's debut album, See The Whirl, hasn't ever been even released on CD, and why so many Gang Of Four fans must ignore these great songs. Much fortunately, we can hear many of them in their original form in this compilation. Tracks like the killer single Mind Your Own Businness, recently covered by Chicks On Speed, you can hear what's special about them: an amazing rhythm section (featuring two basses) dragging you to the dancefloor, a sparse dry guitar and two girls preaching with their minimal yet melodic voices. In his wonderful remix, Peter Hook even adds his own bass. Anticipation is even better, a powerful groove fading in slashed by the guitar chords while the girls might as well be twins of an early Siouxsie.



On the excellent Colour a smooth sax is opposed to an obsessive guitar chord. Alan Riggs'  abrasive, minimal, cold and dry guitar is, for me, the most distinctive sound of Delta 5, often a rhythmic tool matching the groovy and wonderful bass and drums more than a melodic instrument and quite different from the harder and noisier guitar of Gang Of Four. The fast and powerful Singing The Praises is the last studio track, the live numbers are fantastic and you just regret you've never had the chance to dance at one of their gigs. The closing Journey is a slower song and it's maybe the most beautiful of the whole compilation, the menacing rhythm comes from somewhere between Joy Division and PIL's Metal Box, the visionary guitar predicts the Pixies' weirdest numbers. It was a hint the unique talent in this band could have evolved into something more personal, but they were too ahead of their time by then, the album on which Journey appeared didn't succeed (maybe leaving Rough Trade for Charisma Pre Records wasn't a wise move after all) and the band split.

Today the former drummer, Kelvin Knight, runs NMB Management, which has rediscovered another great artist from that era, Robert King, which is about to release a single with his really well promising new band, The Opium Kitchen.



He was the frontman of an even more underrated post punk band, The Scars. They also released their debut album, Author! Author!, on Charisma Records, and it's unbelievable there hasn't ever been a digital release of this masterpiece which must find its place in history between Joy Division and Echo and The Bunnymen.

Elio E Le Storie Tese - L'Album Biango

Bentornati sulla Terra. Nello scorso decennio Elio E Le Storie Tese avevano pubblicato due soli album, ma due capolavori assoluti, di qualità stratosferica, stellare. Già con Cicciput sembrava che fosse impossibile che potessero superarsi, ma sorprendentemente ci riuscirono con Studentessi. Il primo l'album dell'ambizione, il secondo l'album del trionfo artistico. Aspettarsi un terzo album consecutivo a quei livelli, con l'età che supera ormai la cinquantina e la carriera ultratrentennale, non sarebbe stato realistico.
Con L'Album Biango, Elio E Le Storie Tese invecchiano bene. Tornano ai peraltro ottimi livelli degli album della maturità, Eat The Phikis e soprattutto Craccracriccrecr, l'album a cui questo forse somiglia di più, un album più semplice, meno ambizioso, ma comunque di qualità musicale eccellente e con testi divertenti che ci restituiscono i geniacci milanesi come simpatici vecchi brontoloni. Il tema che era già stato anticipato in Parco Sempione, singolo di Studentessi, trova qui largo svolgimento. Gli scenari fantasiosi degli album precedenti si alternano ad un bonario borbottìo sulle scocciature e sul logorìo della vita moderna, anche se lo sguardo è spesso più divertito che cinico.
C'è ancora spazio per gustose scenette come quella dell'apertura di Dannati Forever, canzone eliminata da Sanremo in favore del tormentone de La Canzone Mononota. Il Ritmo Della Sala Prove è, poi, una canzone assolutamente serena, semplicissima nella sua struttura che ricorda George Harrison (anche la citazione beatlesiana del titolo dell'album è più che ovvia), uno sguardo nostalgico alla gioventù degli esordi.
Ma con Enlarge Your Penis emerge il filo conduttore delle scocciature di un uomo di mezza età nella vita di oggi. L'approccio è sempre divertito e saggiamente rassegnato, come in Dannati Forever ("ma sì, con quello che combiniamo basta poco per andare all'inferno, ma saremo in buona compagnia... intanto mandatemi pure tutta la vostra spazzatura spam sulla mia casella di posta elettronica"), musicalmente è una delle canzoni più belle dell'album. Lampo è, in pratica, il primo caso di un artista che scrive una canzone per lamentarsi dei fans che fanno troppe foto, la strofa leggera all'italiana sfocia inaspettatamente in un ritornello hard rock, una specie di improbabile collage tra Drupi e Jimi Hendrix.
La canzone all'italiana trova sempre spazio negli album di Elio, lo trova quasi sempre in chiave più utopistica che parodistica. Melodia e arrangiamento sublimi, come nel caso di Luigi Il Pugilista (che, volendo, ricorda i momenti migliori degli Stadio), come a voler significare che la canzone italiana potrebbe anche essere fatta a questi livelli. Notevole l'assolo di Cesareo.
La simpatica autobiografia di Luigi è seguita da uno dei brani più amari e cinici dell'album, Una Sera Con Gli Amici. La melodia è quasi insignificante, una ballatona in stile anni 50, tipo Platters, per parlare dei pettegolezzi ai danni dell'assente di turno.
Nell'Album Biango ci sono più momenti geniali, non solo La Canzone Mononota, quindi. Amore Amorissimo  (un testo pieno di superlativi fuori luogo per un rapporto di coppia assai scombinato) è molto più che una parodia, un finto inedito di Modugno che era stato anticipato da Fiorello nel suo show.
Le noie non arrivano solo via mail, e a questo punto Elio ci parla dello scocciatore telefonico (interpretato spassosamente da Vittorio Cosma), di cui non riesce a liberarsi neppure a Timbuctu. La band è abituata a prendersi i suoi tempi (ormai 4 o 5 anni sono il tempo di attesa normale tra un album e l'altro), ovvio provare un certo fastidio per chi ti tempesta di telefonate per ottenere risposte immediate per accontentare questo mondo frenetico. Il Tutor Di Nerone è, come Enlarge Your Penis, una delle canzoni migliori anche dal punto di vista musicale, figlia di quell'ambizione che permeava Studentessi e che riemerge in tutto il suo splendore nella fase successiva: in Reggia (Base Per Altezza) la band corona un proprio sogno suonando con tutti i componenti superstiti degli Area, un'introduzione progressive a Come Gli Area, un sentito omaggio a quella band e forse la canzone più bella di tutto l'album, un ritorno alla sperimentazione vertiginosa de Il Congresso Delle Parti Molli, la sbalorditiva conclusione di Studentessi, arricchito da un altro fenomenale assolo di Cesareo. Elio E Le Storie Tese fanno i finti modesti, in pratica dicono che fanno un pezzo in stile Area perchè non sono capaci di suonare i pezzi degli Area, quando i più informati sanno che la loro Biba Band è un'ottimo supergruppo di cover dei Weather Report e quando con questa stessa canzone superano i loro maestri.
Un'altra doppia citazione chiude L'Album Biango: A Piazza San Giovanni, una ballata cantata da Eugenio Finardi, introduce la parodia multipla de Il Complesso Del Primo Maggio. Ce n'è per tutti: i 99 Posse, Bregovic, i Linea 77 ed altri colleghi di palco affettuosamente e spassosamente imitati.
A questo punto è emersa limpidamente un'altra tematica di questo album più semplice dei predecessori ma pur sempre di una complessità che può essere propria solo di una band straordinaria come questa: l'amore per la musica e per il fare musica: l'ispirazione ai propri miti, gli esordi della sala prove, il grande palco condiviso con personaggi di ogni sorta.
Anche L'Album Biango, dunque, richiede più ascolti ed attenzione, tutto ampiamente ripagato. Non il loro disco migliore (ed era francamente impossibile immaginare qualcosa oltre Studentessi), ma un ritorno ai loro standard sempre eccellenti, che ci presenta una band in grado di pubblicare altri ottimi album nel corso di un glorioso viale del tramonto, che speriamo il più lungo possibile.

Come ho smesso di fumare dopo 25 anni

Di solito non parlo di queste cose su questo blog. Ma del resto, non capita tutti i giorni di smettere di fumare. E siccome ci sono un sacco di persone che vogliono smettere, e siccome ci sono un sacco di opinioni strambe a proposito, io vi dico qual'è stata la mia esperienza, poi fate come vi pare.
Prima di tutto, è ovvio, occorre la motivazione (se non volete smettere, non smettete... non sono un proibizionista, non voglio convincere nessuno e capisco benissimo chi non vuole smettere ora, mi rivolgo solo a chi ci ha fatto un pensierino, e so che siete in tanti).
In questi 25 anni non ho mai voluto davvero smettere di fumare, speravo che un giorno l'avrei voluto, ma non lo volevo. Fumare sigarette è una delle tossicodipendenze peggiori in assoluto, vuoi per la nocività della droga (ben maggiore di quella dei proibitissimi spinelli), vuoi perchè è ancora, relativamente, socialmente accettata... Non puoi più fumare al ristorante, ma se durante una cena ti alzi perchè "devi" andare a fumare, nessuno ti guarda storto. Altro aspetto devastante è come l'abitudine si radica nella quotidianità tanto da sembrare inestirpabile, indispensabile. Non è la cannetta che ti fai al sabato sera, non è il cocktail che ti bevi in discoteca, o il metro di birre al pub. E' una sigaretta dopo colazione, un'altra qui, un'altra là, così per tutto il giorno, tutti i giorni.
E così è stato, per questi stupidi 25 anni, da quando ho iniziato alle medie solo per fare il figo, come tutti. Poi comincia a piacerti, o meglio ti ci abitui così tanto che ti piace.
Poi è arrivata la motivazione, appunto. L'ennesima collega fumatrice che muore di tumore è stata una motivazione sufficiente, alla soglia dei 40 anni. Sarà anche vero che si ammala anche chi non fuma, anzi per esperienza familiare purtroppo lo so benissimo, ma innanzitutto almeno chi non fuma non ha questa sciocca e costosissima abitudine da rimproverarsi (con un pacchetto di sigarette ti ci compri una birra, due gelati, quasi tre litri di benzina...). E poi di queste colleghe non ce n'era una che non fumava, un minimo di statistica la possiamo anche fare, suvvia. E basta, piuttosto mi bevo tre Long Island al giorno sinchè muoio di cirrosi, ecco.
Oltre alla motivazione ci vuole una via d'uscita. Sino a pochi anni fa non era affatto facile. Ipnosi, cerotti alla nicotina, antidepressivi, tutta roba che spaventava, così come lo spauracchio della crisi d'astinenza. I più forti smettevano di botto, ma io non ero abbastanza forte, non ero preparato ad abbandonare la mia abitudine così. Poi il progresso ci ha regalato la straordinaria opportunità della sigaretta elettronica. L'ho provata così, senza pretese, pensando che potesse anche non funzionare, e invece ha funzionato. La prima regola è sostituire completamente le sigarette normali con quella elettronica, fumare entrambe non ha senso e non vi porterà da nessuna parte. La questione fondamentale è se vi piace o no, la sigaretta elettronica. Sono stato fortunato, a me è piaciuta. Ho preso una Quantum della Puff (come quella della foto), che garantisce un'ottima autonomia della batteria e un fumo denso e saporito, con l'aroma "Toscana", che non solo ricorda quello del tabacco, ma mi è subito piaciuto più del sapore delle sigarette vere. Non sono pagato dalla Puff, conosco gente che è soddisfatta di altre marche, l'importante è acquistarla di una marca affidabile, così evitate di diventare quell'unico sfigato citato da tutti come esempio perchè "gli è esplosa la sigaretta elettronica in faccia". L'importante è anche non bere il liquido. E' da fumare, non da bere. Vi mangiate forse i sigari? Bere il liquido è pericoloso. Questo non significa che fumarlo lo sia. Se non si è ancora riusciti a provare che il fumo, o meglio, il vapore della sigaretta elettronica, è davvero nocivo, forse è perchè, guarda un po', non lo è, con buona pace dei tabaccai e del Monopolio di Stato che vedono i loro introiti assottigliarsi sempre più. Sono stati fatti parecchi esami sui liquidi, sulle sigarette elettroniche e sui vapori, e sinora le sostanze nocive sono state rilevate (e solo in alcuni modelli) o in quantità irrilevante, o comunque infinitamente inferiore alla loro presenza nelle sigarette vere, dove si trovano insieme ad altre migliaia di sostanze sicuramente cancerogene.
Dunque, intanto con la sigaretta elettronica riducete drasticamente la quantità di sostanze nocive, e la spesa. Nel giro di poche settimane già ammortizzata, poi spenderete all'incirca ogni due mesi quello che oggi spendete magari in una settimana...
Ma non avete ancora smesso, avete ancora la vostra dipendenza, dal sapore, dal gesto... però smettere la sigaretta elettronica è molto più facile che smettere quella vera. L'importante è non farsi venire l'ansia da prestazione, aspettare quel momento o andarselo a cercare, viene da sé, praticamente per caso, quasi inatteso. Vi dico com'è andata con me. Mi ero già accorto che a volte facevo anche senza fumare la sigaretta elettronica, ma la svolta è stata una sera che mi trovavo fuori, e mi sono accorto, dopo cena, di aver dimenticato la sigaretta elettronica a casa. A quel punto ho provato a fumare la sigaretta vera di un amico, almeno dopo il caffè pensavo di averne bisogno... è incredibile come il sapore della sigaretta vera, dopo essermi abituato da più di tre mesi a quella elettronica, mi facesse davvero schifo. Non sono riuscito a dare più di due tiri. Il resto della serata è trascorso comunque benissimo anche senza sigaretta, né vera (mi faceva schifo, perchè dovevo fumarla a tutti i costi? Non avevo mica 13 anni!), né elettronica (l'avevo dimenticata a casa, amen).
Il mattino dopo me la sono cavata benissimo anche senza sigaretta elettronica. L'avevo con me, ma ho provato a non accenderla, se avevo fatto senza la sera prima potevo fare senza anche il mattino dopo, sebbene fossi al lavoro... e poi avevo visto che potevo benissimo bere un caffè senza dover fumare subito dopo, e così eccomi alla macchinetta, bere il mio caffè, e poi... poi niente, perchè ci deve essere bisogno d'altro? Rimane il sapore del caffè, va bene così.
Dopo un paio di giorni ho lasciato a casa anche la sigaretta elettronica, che è stata una transizione utilissima tra il fumare e il non fumare (senza quella transizione non credo che ce l'avrei fatta).
Non ho mai avuto nessuna crisi d'astinenza, nessuna nostalgia, nessun bisogno di fumare alcunchè. Le giornate (belle e brutte, tanto come quando fumavo) trascorrono comunque anche senza fumare, è incredibile com'è facile vivere senza fumo una volta che hai trovato la via d'uscita.
Questa è stata la mia via d'uscita, e coi soldi che avrei speso per l'ennesimo pacchetto di sigarette mi bevo una birra alla salute di chi troverà la sua.

I thought it was about time after 15 years. This song (Mannequins) has been available on a personal site (A New Order Fan of course) about 10 years ago but then disappeared when I moved the site to a blog. I always thought I should reupload it but never actually did it.
Controluce (Backlight) was the band with my sister Serena singing, myself on bass, Marco at the guitar and Luca at the drums. We were inspired by what we had been listening up to then, mainly new wave and shoegazing, and by a really vital scene in Italy we wanted to be part of. We were actually quite naive (though I still think this is a little nice song for what we wanted to do) and some personal issues led to the split just after recording this demo.
If I had the time to do music now, I'd do it really different from that, I'd try to mix fidget house, dembow and afrobeat. But back then all I wanted was to sound like Peter Hook. On the cheapest bass.

My Bloody Valentine - m b v (review)

I was 18 years old when My Bloody Valentine's Loveless came out. Back then, it just looked like music would have kept moving on in a constant progress. It just seemed natural: in 1979 Joy Division, 1983 The Smiths, 1987 Pixies, 1989 My Bloody Valentine.. it was just a matter of waiting to hear the next giant step forward... but after Loveless something went horribly wrong, at least for guitar music. It was just like the utter limit of evolution had been reached, and there was just nothing else to invent. The Americans started looking back with grunge, basically a watered down version of the Pixies for people to cool to lock themselves in the bedroom listening to their father's Led Zeppellin records. In Britain it got even worse. Blur's Modern Life Is Rubbish was the manifesto of a generation who was tired of experimenting and just wanted to have a good time. While nobody dared to say anything bad about My Bloody Valentine, all the other shoegazing bands were subject to derision and were swept away by the reactionary tedious tide of Britpop, people so uncool they wanted to sound exactly like the bands their parents heard at their same age. Music has never recovered since then, basically all the innovative energy was channeled into electronic and dance music, but nobody has ever dared doing anything innovative in guitar music, which became just bland and safe, or an imitation of former glories. My Bloody Valentine signed to Island Records, but the follow up to Loveless hasn't ever been completed in a sorry decline of paranoia which just meant a lot of money wasted.
In these last few years the band reunited to tour, but it was pretty understandable that nobody believed leader Kevin Shields when he said a record was about to be completed.
Well, it was! And it is amazingly excellent too. The ironic thing is My Bloody Valentine just sound like would have in the mid 90s, little or no changes are made to the formula, and yet they sound supernatural, and like coming from the future, for the simple fact nobody has ever dared to go further than them. So, by sounding like themselves 20 years ago, they just sound fresh and innovative, and a chord of theirs is enough to bury all the guitar bands of the last 20 years under their total insgnificance. Any guitar record released between Loveless and "m b v" (that's how it must be written, and the song titles in lower case too) sounds now absolutely meaningless, like something just been made to entertain us in the meanwhile, but without any true ambition. The ambition is all here, in "m b v". My Bloody Valentine wanted to return with a masterpiece, and they did. The songs have amazing sounds and emotional melodies, nobody could have predicted such a return to form.
One might expect if Kevin Shields hasn't had nothing to say for the last 20 years, maybe he has just lost his inspiration and this new album would just sound weak, but it doesn't, it sounds like the record they should have released 20 years ago to save the music scene and just expose the Britpop retards for what they were. This is clear from the emotional start of She Found Now (oh, I'll use capital letters for titles after all), but it becomes definite and absolute by the second track, Only Tomorrow, a simple melody which might as well be a nursery rhyme performed with such a sheer perversion your mind starts tripping with no drugs. By the triumphant guitar finale, those few simple notes played with that passion show clearly the genius is back and ready to teach you once again how music can be made when you have true talent. Who Sees You, heavy sound and sublime tune, might as well be your favourite song on Isn't Anything or Loveless.
Unexpectedly, a psychedelic keyboard dominates Is This And Yes, as ethereal and sublime as the best guitar shoegazing can be. If I Am sounds like a delicate interlude leading us to another small surprise: New You is as pop as My Bloody Valentine can be and in a fair world would be a hit single for weeks on heavy rotation on daytime radio. In Another Way is probably the best song of the album, the guitars are devastating like a hurricane and the acid melody is mind blowing, just when you think it's as good as it gets here's a solemn keyboard making it maybe the most beautiful My Bloody Valentine song ever, just what we've been waiting for these 22 years. There's more magic in "m b v": the heavy frenzy of Nothing Is light speeds us to the noise annichilation of the closing Wonder 2, a YouTube user commented "it's like surfing on a Boeing", and how appropriate. I just hope another user is wrong when he says "The sound of Kevin taking off on his spaceship for another 20 years".
